Fine Building by Tiefenthal
Dan Tiefenthal, President
For Dan Tiefenthal, a "spec" house does not mean "standard specifications". He builds each home like it's a custom job, even if he's building it to sell. From colors and tile selected by his designer/wife, Kathy, to the fine craftsmanship of his finish carpenters, Dan puts together something spectacular. "We searched and searched, and couldn't find anything that came close to Dan's quality," say Bob and Lois, residents of Prairie Oaks. "We walked in and fell in love right away."
"The neighborhood not only looks beautiful but the people are friendly & nice!"
He is a general contractor and a developer, but what he really enjoys is getting out to the jobsite for some hands-on work. "I can only sit behind a desk for so long," says Dan, an avid outdoorsman. His love of the outdoors has shaped his development philosophy, and Prairie Oaks embodies his respect for nature. Dan asks, "Will home buyers appreciate these efforts?" The answer, based on sales in the neighborhood, is a resounding "yes."

Development Philosophy
Prairie Oaks was designed under the supervision of the Kalamazoo Nature Center, a nationally-recognized leader in consulting with developers on how to create a sustainable neighborhood that respects existing wildlife. The open space at Prairie Oaks is a continuous flow of land so that the wild turkey, deer and other animals can make their way around without being shut out by houses and fences. Developer Dan Tiefenthal took great efforts to replant the fields with native prairie grasses and wildflowers. "It's actually a restored prairie, more natural than when I bought it,' indicates Dan.
"We really love our home. You can see and enjoy the quality work."
The Doran's 2007
This philosophy spills over to the houses. Dan's designer uses natural colors on the home exteriors, and Dan adds architecturally interesting features so that the homes are attractive from all angles. "With this much open space, some of the houses can be seen from all sides, and they should look good no matter where you're standing," says his designer. The homes include high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters, as well as wet-spray cellulous insulation and insulated windows. "It doesn't pay to go overboard on high-efficiency items, but some upgrades are clearly worth the effort."
